Why is the teaching profession facing a crisis?

Recruiting quality trainee teachers has never been more difficult, with the profession repeatedly failling to meet DfE recruitment targets in recent years.

There are several reasons to explain why this is happening, including but not limited to:

  • Shortage of placement schools
  • Systemic reductions in bursary funded places for shortage subjects
  • Socio-economic factor such as in many under-resourced communities—where recruiting and retaining teachers is disproportionately challenging—schools will experience shortages of subject specialists.
  • Cost of living crisis - recent graduates cannot not afford to take another year unpaid after university and/or afford the training fees (C£9k). Career changers, TAs and other school support staff cannot afford to lose paid positions in order to train.
